Moments Not to Be Wasted

Our global and local community initiatives include Moments Not To Be Wasted, and in the UK we’ve reached over 600 primary schools to educate children and families on food waste.

Our global and local community initiatives include Moments Not To Be Wasted, and in the UK we’ve reached over 600 primary schools to educate children and families on food waste.

Moments Not To Be Wasted is designed to provide primary schools with the tools required to inspire children and their families to develop their relationships with food, including raising their awareness of food preservation, preparation and consumption. In addition, tailored towards children aged between 6 and 11 years old and their families, Moments Not To Be Wasted aims to change attitudes and behaviours towards sustainability in the kitchen.

The educational project, which ran throughout 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic, provided a range of digital and online-based learning materials, activities and games all of which could still be accessed remotely while schools were closed. This enabled children to be engaged and enthused on the topic of food waste and sustainability while learning at home.

As part of this project, schools were invited to take part in the National Talent Kitchen competition, in which entrants were required to illustrate a waste free kitchen, drawing upon the knowledge they developed throughout their involvement in the project. Entries to the competition closed on 30th November 2020 and Whirlpool announced the winner to be St Ambrose RC Primary School in Manchester, receiving kitchen appliances worth £1,000.

The second year of this project kicked off in September 2021, with another 300 schools signing up to receive our interactive packs to help students learn about reducing food waste. We have also run a number of highly successful live lessons with schools directly, to teach students about this important topic.

Whirlpool UK is committed to promoting issues surrounding food waste and the environment, and through the Moments Not To Be Wasted project have educated children in aim of our long-term commitment to promoting sustainable and ethical food consumption and reducing food waste.
