Responsible use of plastic

At Whirlpool we are committed to be amongst the leaders in the responsible use of plastic, and as a business have adopted internal and external initiatives that drive the reduction of waste to landfill, contribute to the eradication of single use plastics and allow us to make an effective change to the cleanliness of our seas.

All of our manufacturing sites have achieved zero waste to landfill.

In 2018 we voluntarily pledged to the European Commission to use only recycled plastics in our products by 2025.

Since then, we have invested in the PolcyCE project to reduce the use of virgin plastics and enhance the use of recycled plastics in new home appliances, and have been a leader in EMEA in introducing EPS-free packaging for some of our cooking and dishwasher appliances.

In the UK, we have directly removed a significant amount of single-use plastics including the replacement of canteen cutlery, bottles and cups. All our colleagues have been provided with metal water bottles and compostable cups for hot drinks, which is calculated to save 400,000 single-use cups going to landfill annually.

We have also created new waste recycling zones that have included reducing general waste through on-site sortation, reclassification and energy recovery, simplifying processes, and introducing new machinery. These processes have removed the need for almost 20,000 plastic bin liners previously used in individual bins every year.
